Radio NOVA announced as Media Partner of Canalaphonic Festival

Radio NOVA has been announced as main media partner of the 2016 Canalaphonic Music & Culture Festival.

The festival showcases the best of Irish independent music and arts and takes place in the areas around the Grand Canal in South Dublin each year, including Portobello, National Concert Hall Quarter and Camden Quarter. It will be held on Friday and Saturday 23rd and 24th September. More than 120 acts will participate in this year’s event including Mick Pyro, Gavin Glass, Nick Kelly, Rocstrong, The Eskies, Zaska, Mongrel State, Barq, Mongoose, White Mice, The Word Up Collective, Mother Mooch, Late City Edition, Flecks Fox E and the Good Hands, Travis Oaks, Homebeat Events, T.A.S.T.E and many more.

For the month of September, NOVA will highlight acts playing at this year’s festival. The station will have its own takeover of the main indoor stage at Whelan’s, Camden St as well live outdoor broadcasts. In addition, NOVA presenters will perform MC duties throughout the festival.

CANALAPHONIC will be the largest free showcase of independent Irish music in Dublin this year. It is the result of an ongoing collaboration between Dublin City Council’s South East Area Office and Abner Browns Barbershop, supported by Fáilte Ireland, Waterways Ireland, Dublin City Council Arts Office, IMRO, Heineken and Radio NOVA.

NOVA’s Kevin Branigan said, “CANALAPHONIC is a community-based festival featuring music, art and photography exhibitions and lots more, using a mix of bars, coffee shops and local businesses to showcase independent music and arts. We’re delighted to be involved in the festival this year. We love new Irish music here at NOVA and we’re really looking forward to meeting everyone and showcasing some of the great talent taking part on-air”.

This year’s festival will be even bigger and better than last year, with the addition of new venues including Whelan’s, The Opium Rooms, The Bernard Shaw, a new outdoor stage at The National Concert Quarter’s “Vaults” and, this year, the “Making Waves” stage will move to the 5,000-capacity Leinster Cricket Grounds in the centre of Rathmines. There’ll be fun for all the family with the return of the Canal Bank Market at Portobello, which runs monthly from May to September, and a family fun area in St. Mary’s College, Rathmines.

Radio NOVA has 146,000 listeners, with its audience steadily growing since its launch in 2010 *. The station broadcasts a diet of guitar-based music from Irish and International acts from David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, The Doors and Thin Lizzy to The Killers, Kodaline, The Foo Fighters and Kings of Leon.

The station is known for its support of new, Irish music with two flagship programmes dedicated to the scene – ‘Backstage’ is presented by Sinead Ni Mhordha every Saturday at 6pm and ‘Locals Only’ is presented by producer/performer Gavin Glass every Sunday at 6pm.
