Radio Nova Launches Nightly World Cup Extra Programme

Radio Nova signs football supremo Roddy Collins and sports expert Con Murphy for exciting new nightly phone-in show called ‘World Cup Extra’.

Fast-paced programme hosted by the hugely respected and extremely outspoken sports mad duo will air at 10pm from Sunday to Thursday

Radio Nova, the increasingly popular radio station which broadcasts to Dublin, Wicklow, Kildare and Meath, has announced the signing of Roddy Collins and Con Murphy to host its exciting new ‘World Cup Extra’ programme.

The show, which will air from Sunday to Thursday at 10pm for the duration of the World Cup, is designed to bring passionate and informed World Cup coverage from the perspective of the listening audience. Presented by the famously outspoken football manager Roddy Collins and the highly respected former RTE broadcaster Con Murphy, the show will offer soccer fans the opportunity to phone-in and have their say on the World Cup as it happens.

Roddy and Con will be encouraging listeners to share their views about what’s happening on the pitch – while also offering their own lively commentary and analysis of the latest action. World Cup Extra is guaranteed to be fast-paced, entertaining, informative, and, with Roddy Collins on board, it will never ever be dull! It will be absolutely compelling listening, so make sure to tune your dial to 100FM for the duration of World Cup 2014 to keep ahead of the pack!

Roddy says he can’t wait to get behind the Radio Nova microphone to begin broadcasting World Cup Extra: “I love nothing more than discussing and debating football and in my experience the guy in the street has just as much to add to that debate as the pundits – I can’t wait to get into the studio with Con and get this show on the road!”

Con Murphy added: “I’m delighted to be joining the Radio Nova team at such an exciting time in the game of football but also in Radio Nova’s evolution. I’m particularly excited to be working with Roddy Collins and also looking forward to hearing the views of our listeners as this hugely entertaining global tournament unfolds.”

Kevin Branigan, CEO Radio Nova, said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming Roddy and Con to the Radio Nova team. The station has been going from strength to strength in recent times and we’re thrilled to be able to provide such top level content to our existing and new listeners. World Cup fever is about to hit and we’re thrilled that our ‘World Cup Extra’ programme will place us at the very peak of broadcasting coverage of this hugely exciting event.”

Roddy Collins is a Dublin born, former footballer and more recently the outgoing manager of Derry City FC. Roddy made his competitive debut for Bohemians in an FAI League Cup tie against St Pats in 1979 and made his League of Ireland debut shortly afterwards with Finn Harps on the opening day of the 1979-80 League of Ireland season. Since then, Roddy has played for several teams in the League of Ireland and the NIFL Premiership and he has also had spells across the pond at Mansfield Town, Newport County and Cheltenham Town. Roddy’s managerial CV includes stints at Carlisle United, Shamrock Rovers, Monaghan United and Bohemians.

Con Murphy’s sports credentials are second to none. While working with RTE, he was one of the stations main sports presenters. He fronted a variety of television sports programmes including Monday Night Soccer on RTE Two, the League of Ireland highlights show. He also co-presented Sunday Sport on RTE Radio 1. Con also anchored RTE Radio’s coverage of the Summer Olympics Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012. He reported from the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea and presented the nightly highlights programme on RTE Sport’s coverage of the 2010 World Cup.

Radio Nova broadcasts to Dublin, Wicklow, Kildare and Meath on 100FM and offers a diet of guitar-based music from artists like Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie, The Police and Simple Minds to The Killers, Kings of Leon, The Foo Fighters and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Other highlights of the Radio Nova schedule include Joan Lea and Marty Miller’s ‘Morning Glory’ breakfast show, afternoons with radio veteran Pat Courtenay and Peter Devlin’s ‘Saturday Soundtrack’.
